Roar Review by Cora Carmack

*I received this ARC as part of Miss Print’s ARC Adoption Program*

I will say, I was hesitant to read this after all the controversy I heard surrounding this book. I read it also because I promised to read and review this book after a month and I keep my promises.

For months I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about Carmack’s YA debut and I was eager to get my hands on it.

I’ve got to say I really did enjoy it, minus the romance which seemed  obsessive to me personally. It was a very well written book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was a sucker for the storm elements of the novel. I found Carmack’s writing beautiful and lush and loved it so much!

I very much judge books by covers and as soon as I saw Roar’s cover, I fell in love. I’d definitely rate this book ten out of ten and recommend this book to high fantasy lovers and also fans of Carmack’s previous books.

“In a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora’s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks—storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage.

She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.”

Writing Update 6-15-17

I’ve created some aesthetics for my current project, HOFAT. I’m really excited to share them with all of you!

I’ve made one for my protagonist, Aimmenthe, my other MC, Julian and one for the novel as a whole.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more updates!

Name change/ Writing Update! 6-14-17

I’ve officially decided to change the title of my current project, Ways To Be Wicked. I’ve changed it to House of Fire and Thorns! This is probably just a temporary titled and will most likely change as I write the entirety of the book. I’ve also created a placeholder cover as I work on the novel to help inspire me. Tell me what you think of the titled and cover in the comments. I’m only about two chapter in, but I’m really liking what I’ve rewritten so far. I’m going to be working on HOFAT this Camp NaNoWriMo, in July. My current goal is 12K and ten chapters. Stay tuned for more updates!

Writing Update 6-13-17

I started rewriting Ways to be Wicked from scratch today in a Barnes and Noble while drinking the worst iced caramel macchiato of my life.

It is turning out to be quite the process.

I had to send my laptop away for two weeks to get worked on and the original draft of WTBW was lost, but it made me start to rewrite the entirety of the story. I really like what I’ve written so far (like half a page) and can’t wait to see where I’m at at the end of the month. I’m hoping to be around 25K by the end of June and at 65K at the end of July.

Ways To Be Wicked is just a filler title and I actually just finalized the title today and am so excited about it! Stay tuned for more writing updates! 🙂
